Chesapeake, VA – May 31, 2025 — On Saturday, May 31st, the Gamma Xi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. proudly participated in the Annual Relay For Life event held at Chesapeake City Park. The event, which ran from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM (event suspended due to inclement weather), brought together survivors, caregivers, families, and community members in a united stand against cancer.
Organized by the American Cancer Society, Relay For Life is a nationwide movement that raises awareness and funds for cancer research, support services, and advocacy. The Gamma Xi Chapter joined hundreds of participants walking the track, sharing stories, and honoring those affected by the disease.

Fraternity in Action
The Gamma Xi Chapter’s presence was marked by its commitment to community service, brotherhood, and uplifting those in need. Members set up a tent decorated in purple and gold, distributed educational materials, and participated in various relay activities throughout the day. The fraternity also raised funds in support of cancer patients and their families, continuing its legacy of servant leadership.
Brothers of Gamma Xi walked in solidarity with survivors and in memory of loved ones lost, offering words of encouragement and comfort to those navigating the journey of cancer recovery. Their participation was a testament to the chapter’s values and its ongoing engagement in health and social justice initiatives.

Community Spirit and Support
Chesapeake City Park was filled with energy and purpose as teams from across the region came together to celebrate life and raise hope. Luminaria bags lined the track as evening fell, each one glowing in tribute to a name, a face, a story. The emotional luminaria ceremony reminded everyone of the importance of continued advocacy, research, and community support.
Food vendors, entertainment, and family-friendly activities made the day a vibrant mix of memories and celebration, while teams shared fellowship and a common goal—to end cancer. As a result of the goodwill of the event, Gamma Xi was able to raise $1022.68 online and $220 day of the event in donations.
 
Through their active involvement in the 2025 Relay For Life, the Gamma Xi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. once again demonstrated that their motto, “Friendship is Essential to the Soul,” extends far beyond fraternity—it’s a guiding principle in their service to humanity.

Norfolk, VA – May 17, 2025 — On a reverent Saturday morning, the Hampton Roads Uplift Foundation, in partnership with the Lambda Omega and Gamma Xi Chapters of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., held a powerful Wreath Laying Ceremony to honor African American Civil War veterans and all U.S. military personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation.
The ceremony took place at 10:00 AM at the Historic West Point Cemetery, located at 238 E. Princess Anne Road in Norfolk, Virginia. The event brought together community members, military families, veterans, local leaders, and fraternity brothers in solemn remembrance and unity.

Honoring Legacy of Service and Sacrifice
The ceremony paid tribute to the countless African American soldiers who served in the United States Colored Troops (USCT) during the Civil War and the Spanish-American War —many of whom are buried at West Point Cemetery. These men, often forgotten in history, fought not only for the Union but for the future of their descendants and the principles of liberty and equality. Their legacy was remembered alongside all veterans from every era who have laid down their lives in service to America.
West Point Cemetery, one of the nation’s oldest African American cemeteries, provided a deeply symbolic setting for the event. Established in 1873, the cemetery is the final resting place for over 58 African American Civil War veterans, and it served as a solemn reminder of the struggles and triumphs of those who served.

Distinguished Guest Speakers
The event featured heartfelt remarks from two respected local leaders:

• Virginia Delegate C.E. Cliff Hayes, Jr., who spoke on the enduring impact of African American service members in shaping the nation and the importance of preserving their stories for future generations.
• Norfolk City Councilman John “JP” Paige, who emphasized the local significance of West Point Cemetery and urged the community to continue honoring the heritage and bravery of those buried there.

Their words resonated with the audience, calling for reflection, gratitude, and a renewed commitment to remembrance.
 
 
Fraternal Commitment to Community and History
Members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., through the Lambda Omega Chapter (Norfolk) and Gamma Xi Chapter (Virginia Beach), played a leading role in organizing and participating in the ceremony. Their presence underscored the fraternity’s continued dedication to service, education, and cultural preservation.
Fraternity brothers stood in solidarity with veterans and civic leaders, helping to lay wreaths and share in the solemn moment of reflection.

Community Engagement and Reflection
The event was attended by a diverse gathering of citizens from across the Hampton Roads area. Approximately 25 guests were in attendance for the event. Veterans, students, families, and community groups joined together to pay their respects and learn more about the vital role African Americans have played in the country’s military history.
The laying of wreaths was accompanied by moments of silence. The program concluded with calls to action encouraging historical preservation, civic service, and intergenerational education.

Drew Memorial Blood Drive at Lynnhaven Mall in Virginia Beach. The event ran from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM and was held in honor of Dr. Charles R. Drew, a pioneer in the field of blood banking and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
The blood drive served as both a tribute to Dr. Drew’s groundbreaking medical work and a vital community service event aimed at addressing the ongoing need for blood donations in the region.

Honoring a Legacy Through Service

Dr. Charles R. Drew is celebrated for his revolutionary contributions to blood transfusion and the development of large-scale blood banks. His work has saved countless lives and continues to influence modern medicine. The Gamma Xi Chapter carried forward his legacy by encouraging the local community to give the gift of life through blood donation.
Fraternity members welcomed donors, assisted with registration, and partnered with medical professionals to ensure a smooth and supportive donation process. The event attracted a steady stream of donors from across the area, including first-time participants and longtime supporters of the cause.

Community Impact and Brotherhood in Action
The blood drive demonstrated the Gamma Xi Chapter’s ongoing commitment to health advocacy and public service. By hosting the event at the high-traffic Lynnhaven Mall, the chapter increased visibility and accessibility for donors, helping to meet critical blood supply needs for area hospitals and emergency centers.

​In addition to collecting units of blood, the event also raised awareness about the importance of regular donation and educated attendees on Dr. Drew’s enduring contributions to science and medicine. Informational materials and fraternity outreach added a meaningful educational component to the day’s efforts.
