On Saturday, May 16, 2026, the Hampton Roads Uplift Foundation and The Virginia Uplift Foundation hosted their Annual Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Historic West Point Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia. The solemn event honored African American Civil War veterans and all veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation. Brothers of the Lambda Omega and Gamma Xi Chapters joined community leaders, veterans, students, and supporters in paying tribute at one of Hampton Roads’ most historic African American burial grounds.

West Point Cemetery, also known as Potter’s Field and Calvary Cemetery, holds deep historical significance within the City of Norfolk. Established in 1873, the cemetery serves as the resting place for 58 Black soldiers and sailors who served during the American Civil War. A monument honoring those veterans stands prominently within the cemetery, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. The sacred grounds also include notable landmarks such as Potter’s Field, the O’Rourke Mausoleum, and the historic West Point Cemetery entry sign.

The ceremony began with a Call to Order and Welcome led by Master of Ceremonies Bro. Rev. Dr. Tommy Smith. The Western Branch High School JROTC presented the Procession of Colors, setting a respectful and patriotic tone for the morning’s observance.

Musical honors followed with Cadet/Master Sergeant Kelsey Gribbon delivering a stirring rendition of “The National Anthem.” Attendees also joined in the singing of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” often regarded as the Black National Anthem, adding a powerful and emotional moment to the ceremony. An invocation prayer was then offered before Bro. Rev. Dr. Tommy Smith introduced the guest speaker.

The keynote address was delivered by Captain Leonard V. “Len” Remias, USN (Ret.), who reflected on the courage, sacrifice, and enduring legacy of African American veterans throughout American history. His remarks encouraged attendees to continue preserving the stories and honoring the contributions of those who fought for freedom and equality despite adversity.

Several distinguished guests also delivered remarks during the program, including The Honorable Bro. Cliff Hayes, Jr., member of the Virginia House of Delegates for the 91st District; The Honorable John E. “JP” Paige, Norfolk City Council member representing Ward 4; and Bro. Craig L. Branch, 32nd Third District Representative. Each speaker emphasized the importance of remembrance, unity, and continued community engagement in preserving African American history.
Fraternal greetings were presented by Bro. Terry Calhoun of the Gamma Xi Chapter and Bro. Ted Price, Vice Basileus of the Lambda Omega Chapter, both of whom highlighted the significance of fellowship and service within the community.

The ceremony’s central moment came during the wreath laying at the African American Memorial, where participants paused to honor the fallen veterans whose sacrifices paved the way for future generations. The observance concluded with the playing of Taps and a solemn moment of silence, creating a powerful closing tribute to the brave men and women remembered throughout the day.

On Saturday, May 16, 2026, the Virginia Beach Alumnae Chapter (VBAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. hosted its Dr. Dorothy I. Height Scholarship and Awards Program at Tallwood High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The annual program celebrated academic excellence, leadership, community service, and the achievements of outstanding individuals dedicated to uplifting the community.

The purpose of the Dr. Dorothy I. Height Scholarship and Awards Program was to encourage higher education, support outstanding African American youth in their academic endeavors, and recognize individuals who demonstrated exceptional leadership and service within their communities. The event brought together educators, students, community leaders, families, and supporters for an inspiring afternoon of recognition and celebration.

During the ceremony, Brother W. Terry Calhoun was honored with a Service Award for Political Awareness and Involvement. The award recognized his continued dedication to civic engagement, community leadership, and efforts to increase political awareness throughout the Hampton Roads community.

Brother Calhoun’s commitment to service and advocacy reflected the values of leadership, scholarship, and public service that the program sought to promote. His recognition highlighted the importance of active community involvement and the impact that dedicated leaders can have on future generations.

The event served as a meaningful occasion to celebrate both student achievement and community excellence while continuing the legacy and vision of Dr. Dorothy I. Height through education, empowerment, and service.

The purpose of the South Hampton Roads Pan-Hellenic Council (SHARPC) Unsung Hero Banquet is to recognize and honor members of the historically Black Greek-letter organizations known as the “Divine Nine” who have provided exceptional service, leadership, and community impact—often without widespread public recognition. The Gamma Xi 2026 Unsung Hero is Brother Reginald Duckett Jr.

Brother Reginald Duckett, Jr., initiated into the Gamma Xi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. in Spring 2010, has exemplified unwavering dedication to the Fraternity’s cardinal principles throughout his years of service. A graduate of Norfolk State University with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, Brother Duckett has consistently used his professional expertise to strengthen the financial stewardship and operational excellence of the chapter, district, and affiliated foundations.

His leadership is most notably reflected in his long-standing commitment to fiscal management. Brother Duckett served as Chairman of the Budget Committee from 2012 to 2016 and has held the office of Keeper of Finance for Gamma Xi from 2018 to 2025. In these roles, he has ensured transparency, accountability, and strategic financial planning, earning the trust and respect of his chapter brothers. His contributions extend to the 3rd District, where he has served on the District Audit Committee since 2014, helping to uphold strong financial governance across the region.

Beyond financial leadership, Brother Duckett has demonstrated a deep commitment to community uplift through service as Treasurer of the Gamma Xi Uplift Foundation—now the Virginia Uplift Foundation—from 2014 to 2020, and his continued role as a board member, reflect his dedication to supporting scholarships, youth development, and community-based initiatives. His mentorship with the Golden Fold of Alpha Iota Chapter further highlights his passion for guiding young men toward academic achievement, leadership, and personal growth.

Brother Duckett’s consistent service on the Social Action Committee and Ways and Means Committee underscores his broad impact and willingness to support the Fraternity wherever needed. His integrity, humility, and steadfast commitment to excellence embody the spirit of an Unsung Hero.

​The Gamma Xi Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. commemorated a historic milestone with a weekend of celebration marking 50 years of service, fellowship, and community impact.

The festivities began on March 20, 2026, with the Purple and Gold Voyage. The event brought together brothers of the Gamma Xi Chapter along with supporters who had stood by the organization throughout its five decades of service. The cruise was filled with excitement, reflection, and camaraderie as attendees celebrated the chapter’s enduring legacy and the strong bonds that had been built over the years.

The celebration continued on March 21, 2026, with the Black Tie Gala held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. This elegant, sit-down dinner honored the chapter’s 50-year journey and paid tribute to its Charter Members and dedicated brothers. The evening was marked by heartfelt acknowledgments, shared memories, and a deep appreciation for the foundation laid by those who helped establish and sustain the chapter.

Following the gala, the energy shifted into a lively “Party in Black,” held from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM. Attendees enjoyed an evening of music, fellowship, and celebration, further strengthening the spirit of brotherhood and unity that defined the Gamma Xi Chapter.

The weekend concluded with a church service and cake cutting ceremony at Grove Baptist Church. This final gathering provided a moment of reflection and gratitude, as members and supporters came together to give thanks for the chapter’s 50 years of impactful service and to look ahead toward a promising future.
Overall, the weekend of events served as a powerful tribute to the Gamma Xi Chapter’s legacy, highlighting its commitment to service, brotherhood, and community excellence over the past half-century.

​The Joint Omega Talent Hunt 2026 was held on February 22, 2026, at 5:00 PM at the Zeiders American Dream Theater. The event was presented by the Gamma Xi, Lambda Omega, Zeta Iota, and Sigma Kappa Kappa chapters of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., continuing the fraternity’s longstanding commitment to uplifting youth through the arts.

Through its annual Talent Hunt Program, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. provided a platform for talented young individuals to showcase their abilities in the performing and visual arts. The program was designed to offer participants valuable exposure, encouragement, and financial assistance, while also celebrating excellence and creativity within the community. Attendees experienced an evening filled with impressive performances that highlighted the dedication and artistic expression of each participant.

​At the conclusion of the competition, the winners were announced and recognized for their outstanding performances. Julian Gonzalez earned third place honors, Primas Paige secured second place, and Nyla Wimbish was awarded first place. Each winner received recognition along with scholarship prizes, reflecting the fraternity’s continued investment in the future success of young artists.
Overall, the Joint Omega Talent Hunt 2026 was a successful and inspiring event that reinforced the importance of supporting youth development through the arts while strengthening community engagement.

The brothers of the Gamma Xi chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., hosted a dynamic STEM Q&A Panel at Churchland High School in Portsmouth on Thursday, February 19th. The event brought together 25 engaged students for an informative and inspiring discussion centered on STEM pathways, college experiences, and professional development.

The panel was designed to give students direct access to accomplished professionals who had navigated academic and career journeys in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The goal was to provide practical guidance, real-world insight, and encouragement to young scholars considering futures in STEM fields.

Gamma Xi members in attendance included Brother Mike Mitchell,  Brother Tim Pellerin,  Brother Dr. Shafeeq Ameen, and Brother Steve Bynum. Each brother shared his personal educational journey, highlighting the challenges he faced, the lessons he learned, and the strategies that helped him succeed. They spoke candidly about selecting majors, adapting to college life, overcoming obstacles, and positioning themselves for long-term professional growth.

The discussion also explored the importance of discipline, mentorship, networking, and continuous learning. Students were encouraged to ask questions about internships, campus involvement, career pivots, and how to remain competitive in rapidly evolving industries. The panelists emphasized that success in STEM required not only academic preparation, but also resilience, discernment, and a commitment to lifelong improvement.

The conversation was skillfully guided by moderator Brother Torrance Massenburg Jr., who ensured that the dialogue remained engaging, relevant, and student-focused. His thoughtful questions helped draw out meaningful stories and actionable advice from each panelist.

The event concluded with students expressing appreciation for the transparency and authenticity of the discussion. The Gamma Xi brothers left knowing they had made a positive impact by investing in the next generation of leaders and innovators. The STEM Q&A Panel served as a powerful reminder that representation, mentorship, and shared experience can open doors and inspire students to pursue their ambitions with confidence.

​On Saturday, January 24, 2026, the brothers of the Gamma Xi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. proudly represented at the Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) 18th Annual African American Male Summit, held in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at Green Run High School.

Guided by the powerful theme, “The Time Is Always Right to Do What Is Right,” the summit brought together more than 300 students, parents, educators, and community members for a day centered on leadership, responsibility, and positive manhood.

Gamma Xi’s own Elisha “Cadillac” Harris ’79 served as the keynote speaker, delivering an inspiring address that challenged young men to lead with integrity, purpose, and courage. His message resonated strongly with the audience and reinforced the enduring legacy of Dr. King’s call to action. Additionally, Tim Pellerin ’84 represented Gamma Xi by presenting to the high school youth, offering guidance and encouragement rooted in lived experience, mentorship, and achievement.
Further demonstrating true Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift, Wm. Terry Calhoun ’00 and Marcus Rinehardt ’23 volunteered throughout the event, assisting as needed and serving as visible role models for the young men and families in attendance.

The summit also welcomed Mrs. Jobynia Caldwell, the originator of the African American Male Summit at Tallwood High School, whose continued leadership and vision were instrumental to the program’s success. She was joined by numerous Omega brothers from across VBCPS and the local community, underscoring a collective commitment to youth development and community engagement.
